ABOUT AAFSC:

For over 30 years, the Arab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC) has proudly served immigrants and refugees. We help children stay safe, families remain together, and newcomers navigate life in New York City. While our doors are open to all, AAFSC has expertise in serving Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian communities.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Deputy Director of Preventive Services serves as a key member of AAFSC’s Preventive Leadership team, driving strategic outreach, partnership development, and program performance across New York City. This new position at AAFSC will provide direct support to Preventive Services teams across boroughs, ensuring program implementation aligns with best practices as well as the requirements and expectations of the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). In addition, the Deputy Director will offer steady leadership during staff transitions to support continuity in operations and service delivery.

In close coordination with the Vice President of Preventive & Anti-Violence Initiatives, the Deputy Director will represent AAFSC, and its best-in-class child welfare programs, at meetings with ACS, philanthropic funders, the Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies (COFCCA) and other partners, helping to maintain strong external relationships.

Finally, the Deputy Director will lead AAFSC’s city-wide child welfare outreach initiatives, ensuring our Preventive Services program is widely known by partner organizations, connecting with families in need of support with appropriate services while also meeting ACS’s program utilization requirements. To do this successfully, the Deputy Director will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders—including schools, hospitals, service providers, and community-based organizations—to improve service accessibility.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and dynamic leader with strong analytical, coaching, and communication skills who will drive program excellence and foster a culture of collaboration, success for our staff and clients, and continuous improvement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strengthening Partnerships, Outreach, and Program Utilization Efforts

As part of AAFSC’s commitment to expanding access and deepening community impact, the Deputy Director will work closely with Preventive Leadership to build strong relationships, support outreach efforts, and help advance program goals by:

  • Collaborating with leadership to improve outreach strategies by reviewing data, identifying trends, and suggesting thoughtful improvements.
  • Supporting the planning and facilitation of outreach events that connect communities to vital services and helping identify and grow partnerships with service providers, schools, hospitals, and community-based organizations.
  • Ensuring outreach efforts align with broader goals around program utilization, community engagement, and service accessibility.
  • Supporting program directors in strengthening outreach planning and execution by providing strategic guidance, reviewing referral data, and assisting in the development of approaches that align with ACS utilization requirements.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders across the five boroughs—including COFCCA, ACS, and funders—with occasional travel for convenings.

Program Leadership Mentorship, Coaching, and Support:

The Deputy Director will play a pivotal role in supporting program leadership across AAFSC’s sites, fostering a collaborative and resilient team culture. Through hands-on coaching, supervision, and operational guidance, the Deputy Director ensures that program leaders are well-equipped to navigate challenges, enhance service delivery, and uphold AAFSC’s mission by:

  • Providing strategic and operational support, promoting cross-site collaboration and consistency in service standards, and offering mentorship and professional development to strengthen team capacity.
  • Maintaining a consistent in-person presence across AAFSC’s sites to provide hands-on support and build strong relationships with Preventive teams.
  • Partnering with the VP and Preventive Leadership to implement strategies that promote staff well-being and retention, including workload management, team-building, and wellness initiatives.
  • Providing interim leadership coverage during extended staff leave, including serving as Acting Program Director or supporting directors covering supervisory roles.
  • Contributing to the development of internal policies, procedures, and formal communications with funders and external partners.
  • Collaborating with the VP and Preventive Leadership to support audit processes, including participating in site visits and assisting with follow-up and communication as needed.
  • Performing additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned, in alignment with organizational needs and priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES OF OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree;
  • Demonstrated experience fostering collaborative, cross-functional teams, with the ability to coach and support team members in developing their leadership capacity.
  • Previous experience as a senior leader in Preventive and Social Services with at least 5 years of executive/senior level experience;
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to manage crises and attend convenings.
  • Strong experience developing policy, protocols, procedures, and training curricula;
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office and project management software;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills;

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
